The International day of People with Disability is celebrated on the 3rd December. With the help of Mission Australia we joined in the fun at an event in Mount Barker which included a sausage sizzle, lawn games, raffle and much more!

“HCO is proud to support people living with disability and each year on the 3 December we pause to recognise and celebrate the contributions of people with disability in Australia and around the world. This day is a United Nations sanctioned day celebrated internationally. Today HCO is participating in a community event in Mt Barker hosted by Mission Australia.

“My reflection on the day as HCO’s CEO is that recently I attended a National Disability Sector conference where we heard updates from politicians, academics and other experts in the disability sector but for me, the most powerful conference message was the keynote address from Dr Ben Gauntlett, Disability Discrimination Commissioner from the Australian Human Rights Commission. He spoke powerfully of the deep obligation of Organisations like HCO in ensuring the human rights of people with disability are upheld.

“HCO through its staff living our values every day is well positioned to promote and safeguard the human rights of the people we support – HCO’s values are respecting human dignity, promoting citizenship and self-determination, acting with integrity and valuing diversity. My challenge to myself personally and to us all as a community is to relentlessly uphold these values every day in the work we do seeking to positively impact on the lives of those we support.” HCO CEO Sue Horsnell
